Character and Background Designs

Character Designs

These were two sketches that I drew when i was thinking about my synopsis for the story. They are the first visual representatios of the characters that i thought of. At the time, I liked the idea of Bruce being a piece of streaky bacon, and there are no particular features that make him stand out, he is essentially streaky bacon with a face.
Elly again was a very simple character. The only way to distinguish the fact that she is a female character is to look at her eyelashes and the small amount of pink on her hands and feet. I had trouble thinking of ideas for Elly's appearance but she developed a bit later on.

I drew this design after I wrote the synopsis for the story. There isn't much change to Elly's appearance, I just gave her pink arms and legs instead of feet and hands and made her head more egg shaped.
Obviously this is a completely different design for Bruce. He is an ordinary rasher of bacon this time, and a more realistic colour. I liked this design because i think the facial expression seems to give him a lot of character. He immediately appears sweet and innocent, which i prefffered after drawing it. At this point i never gave him any arms or legs either, simply because i couldn't imagine him with them. I couldn't imagine what they would look like or how to draw them.

I later sat down and did a page of different designs for Elly because I thought that she needed the most work. I did something completely different for each of the designs, such as experimenting with or without limbs, changing the hairstyle and colour and also the detailing in the face. The final design that I went with was the one of Elly holding the daisy, but i added the blonde hair to it.
There is also another character design for Bruce here aswell. It's really simple like the one before, but he is a piece of streaky bacon again. Although I like this design I think he looks too 'rough and ready' which is not the personality that I wanted him to have. I used copic marker pens to colour in the images and i really like the effect that they have.

This was a very quick set of drawings that i did just to see what Elly would look like with hair. I also did a couple of different emotions to see if her facial features could be manipulated easily enough.

Again, this is just a quick sketch of what i wanted the final version of Bruce to look like. Around him I was drawing different faces to use when his face hits the bacon packet.

Background Designs

For my second shot of the film, the action takes place inside a refrigerator, so i did a lot of research into designing this background.

I took these 3 images from the internet in order to get an idea for the design and layout of my fridge. I liked the first and second ones because of the draws on the bottom, but I also liked the third one because it was two simple shelves. So i used all of these ideas and ended up having two glass shelves with transparent plastic drawers at the bottom, meaning that it resembled the middle fridge the most.
I also wanted to get an idea of the type of food to put into the fridge. I ended up using one draw for fruit and the other for vegetables. For the shelves I knew that I needed a packet of bacon and an eggbox, other than that, I used the shapes of jars, tubs and containers that i liked from these fridges and then decided on their contents after. I never used names or brands on the labels, but i did use similar shapes and colours.

Here are a few images that I got for designing the eggbox. I like the first image because that is almost an exact copy of my first shot and the egg is wearing gloves too, which i thought it was quite strange to find.
The second image I found when I was toying on the idea of giving the other eggs faces in the eggbox, but I  decided to make sure that the entire focus was on Elly so I never saw this through.
The third image I used to draw the eggbox for the shot, as Elly is lifting up the lid and this was almost the exact view that I wanted.

Above is a series of images that i used from the internet to help draw the contents of my fridge, I especially had to research how to draw the peppers. It helped alot that each of the images had highlights and toning aswell because i think it was this lil addition that made my interpretations more realistic.

When I was attempting to draw the cucmber and bananas I couldn't find the correct colour, so I researched both real and cartoon versions to see difference and which colours worked best. I also didn't know what shape would make a cucumber obviously recognisable.

This is the end result of my research and the background for my second shot.
